Huawei Joins Over 20 Operators to Build 50+ 5G Pre-Commercial Networks

(Yicai Global) July 18 — Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies has teamed with over 20 telecommunications operators worldwide to build more than 50 5G pre-commercial networks to demonstrate key technology, technical standards and core bands, said Wu Yong, Huawei’s 5G researcher at the 5G & Future Network Strategy Workshop that convened yesterday in Beijing.
“To develop 5G networks, we need to get ready in three respects: 1. technical standards; 2. spectrum allocation; and 3. establishment of a 5G ecosystem,” Wu said,
The 5G technical standards have been verified and its spectrum is under planning and allocation. The International Organization for Standardization, 3rd Generation Partnership Project has provided a technological base for large-scale deployment of 5G networks, online telecommunications news portal C114 reported.
The 3rd 5G & Future Network Strategy Workshop focuses on ways to break the commercial bottleneck of 5G chips and terminals, achieve open and smart wireless networks, consider cross-industry demands and tackle technical problems with the 5G millimeter wave while pushing industrialization.
Experts from Qualcomm, Ericsson and Intel also attended the summit with Huawei. Qualcomm will start pre-commercial deployment in the next half year in a bid to commercialize the technology next year, said Xu Hao, Qualcomm China’s head of research and development. “There will be more 5G commercial milestones next year,” he added.
3GPP determined the 5G standalone standard and completed normalization for the first stage on June 14, thus indicating 5G’s worldwide development has already entered the critical phase of commercialization.
