(Yicai Global) June 28 — Finnish telecommunications mammoth Nokia signed a cooperation agreement with Chinese internet titan Tencent Holdings yesterday at the opening of the 2018 Mobile World Congress Shanghai. The two parties will jointly build a 5G joint laboratory to promote the research and verification of the new 5G business.
Nokia and Tencent will leverage their respective advantages to build a 5G end-to-end experimental environment in their lab to deploy typical applications and services such as game cloud, Internet of Vehicles, and 5G edge computing, per the agreement. The two parties will also explore other potential cooperative opportunities in emerging sectors, Tencent Technology reported.
Shenzhen-based Tencent is one of the largest Internet technology enterprises in China. A quarterly report shows that the number of users of its WeChat messaging and payment app has reached 1.04 billion. The company also leads in gaming, mobile payment, cloud services, and artificial intelligence.
The parties will provide operators, industry customers and consumers with richer, multi-tiered applications and digital services, thereby supporting each other to create greater economic and social benefits in their respective fields and set a new pattern of digital economic development, said Zeng Yu, vice president of Tencent.
The 2018 Mobile World Congress Shanghai is slated for June 27 to 29. It is themed ‘Discover a Better Future,’ with eight core activity themes, among them, AI, digital consumption, and future service providers.
